I'm not sure if this really fits into what my blog is about in general, but I figure it's my blog and I can do what I like.lol.
I recently wrote about the Twilight series which I adored, and since reading it I've become a little bit obsessed with the upcoming film. Twilight the movie is set to be released in the US on November 21st of this year and currently is looking at a UK release of January 2009 although I'm hoping this will get moved up. Whilst Twilight hasn't had the same level of success in the UK as it has in the US it has still done quite well and we also have the added interest of the lead male role of Edward Cullen being played by our very own Robert Pattinson (of Cedric Diggory fame).
The casting of Robert met with unbelievable levels of anger from Twilight fans and the actor is said to have received masses of hate mail in the few months after his casting being announced. The furore seems to have died down since Stephenie Meyer herself came out in support of Rob but out of interest I searched Facebook groups with Rob's name in and couldn't believe the strength of feeling of people who wished him dead, claimed he was the spawn of Satan and claimed their hearts died as they knew Rob was going to single-handedly ruin the film. I have to say I was more than a little bit disgusted.
On some levels I suppose I can sympathise with the Twilight fans after all Edward is a character described through the eyes of someone who is obsessively in love with him and he therefore comes to represent the perfect guy of every girl who reads them, it is therefore impossible to please everybody. I guess I was lucky, I've been a fan of Rob's since I lost my heart watching the Goblet of Fire so when I was reading Twilight I actually did picture Rob as Edward so I was thrilled!
However I CANNOT comprehend the utter disregard twilight fans have shown for Robert Pattinson's feelings and professional integrity. I can barely begin to imagine what it would feel like to have thousands of females calling you ugly and screaming for your blood and Robert is not a seasoned actor who has seen or experienced anything like this kind of reaction before, it's got to hurt. And in terms of his professional integrity I cannot imagine anything more galling for an actor than having people saying how dreadful you are and how you've ruined a film before you've even had a chance to shoot one scene. It is amazing what you can do with make-up and lighting, whether Rob looks like someone's picture of Edward should not be the issue. The character of Edward comes from within; the mental struggles, the mannerisms, the utter hatred of what he is vs his all consuming love for Bella, these are the real challenges that will separate a stellar Edward from a lacklustre on. I personally believe that Robert Pattinson is eminently capable of performing on these things and I hope the doubters will be pleasantly surprised or at the very least watch it before they put their plans to have him hung, drawn and quartered into action.

I totally agree with your blog about this and the above comment. I hadn't heard too much about the Twilight Series until a friend pointed me in that direction. I didn't even realise they were making a film of it until it came out. It makes me feel physically ill to think that people would hurl hate mail at anyone, let alone Rob. Have these peeps got nothing better to do then try to make someone top themself and make them feel worthless. I'm glad he came out fighting and was strong 'coz it could have easily gone the other way and 'we' may never known Rob. If lots of people sent me crap like that... well, I dread to think how sad and hurt I'd be. Surely, you should treat people as you, yourself, would like to be treated. I can't imagine how Mr.Pattinson and his folks must have felt reading all of that rubbish that he's ugly! Haven't they been looking at all the pictures I've seen of him? He is undoubtedly, gorgeous and very talented to boot. I only hope he took the hate mail and burned it without reading it first! It's utter garbage and thats that! He has proved them all wrong now though :-) He's one of Hollywoods Hottest stars and long may it stay that way. He seems to put 200% and real thought into all the characters he has portrayed. Everyone thinks he's fab now and I hope it remains that way but I still would like him to be left alone from the journalists and screaming fans sometimes - I feel he needs some Rob space. He shines!

Well, I could imagine the existence of the hate-mail, but I've never heard of it. I was more grieving about Rob being so adored. I felt much pity for him even before I read the books and understood appeal of Edward. And I'm not sure I enjoy the movie, though I can't tell I'm disgusted with his performance. He's a pretty bearable actor, and he did as much as he could - did it professionally and worth watching, though he didn't resemble my personal imaginary Edward in a slightest bit.
But time went and I got used to him. [I adored him in 'The Goblet of Fire' too, so it was an easy task to get obsessed with Rob as I usually was obsessed with the representatives of my next in turn favorite fiction character [as I was deeply obsessed with Christian Bale after 'The Dark Knight' or Johnny Depp after 'Edward Scissorhands' (Edward
)]. Though I missed some of Rob's childish roundness he had while playing Cedric..] But it was getting worse every day. I didn't like him as an actor at first, and perhaps not even as a musician. I didn't like what he did - I liked what he was. I enjoyed his jokes and sarcasm in the interviews..
So I ended up watching 'Twilight' every other day [but I still don't think of it much as a movie].. waiting for 'New Moon', hoping to see more and be pleased.. And writing a blog, to get over my obsession with Rob.
You're fairly welcome to read it, if you have any interest.. I'm writing as a series of letters to Rob [no hate-mail, just mail I was never crazy enough to dream of sending..]

I personally have not witnessed too many hateful comments toward Rob Pattinson online. The facts are: the man takes unbelievably good photographs, he's probably made more in one year than I have in my entire life, he's 22 and having fun doing what he loves most. Some people are just going to shine (others will always be jerks). I only hope that Mr. Pattinson etches this period of his life in his mind and never forgets all the emotions that go with it. My sincerest wish is that he continue to blow Hollywood away with his presence and show them that he's a force to be reckoned with - not a teen idol. There are few real artists like him.
